This blog will be a place for family and friends to come for news and photos. It will be a place we can muse about the important things in life like the Cardinals, religion, and politics.
The Cards have tended to play in 3 World Series in their successful decades and this will help toward that end. I see another trip to the fall classic in the Cards' future if Walt has a good offseason. The pieces are in place and the farm system is in better shape than it has been. I hope the Cards have learned their lesson regarding young pitchers - they are prized possessions and essential to sustaining success.
This sums up what I (and most other people) think of Juan Pierre: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/09/2007_mlb_free_a_1.html.
There are some on the Cards talk forum at stltoday.com that think the Cards should sign him as a corner outfielder, which is laughable (I suspect these are closet Cubs fans). His offensive skill set isn't even tolerable for a centerfielder, much less a corner outfielder. His offensive production might be tolerable for a middle infielder but that's about it. Walt is not dumb enough to bite on this one. Pierre should thank his stars the Cubs were dumb enough to pay him $8 million last year.
The offseason focus now shifts to the pitching staff. What will happen there is anybody's guess.
I have a feeling the Cards will sign Luis Gonzales and perhaps platoon him or Duncan with Encarnacion. The chances of dumping Encarcion are, unfortunately, slim to none. The second base position is probably the least of their concerns.
Juan will be ok as a fourth outfielder since he can play center. Jim needs to play only about 4 - 5 games a week. He needs to stay healthy. I'd rather have a better 4th outfielder, but we are definitely stuck with Juan. Pierre is terrible. his OPB was only .330 last year. For a guy with no power that's horrible.
